Our village, Ban Khek Noi, has the largest population of Hmong people in Thailand. Our home has many Hmong, white Hmong, green Hmong, black Hmong, and Hmong from other countries. Many countries immigrated to this place. Our village therefore has a variety of Hmong people. Each group of Hmong has a slightly different language and way of life. But it did not separate us from each other. Ban Khek Noi was established in 1945 and changed to a sub-district in 1994.

The Way We Live

Because we don’t have a home, immigration is something our ancestors were familiar with.

“I remember my mother always telling me that A mother’s entire life is a journey to escape, and finally here we are. Because of the king’s kindness, we have the house we have today. There is a royal image in every home of the Hmong people.”

Farming is our last occupation. We like to grow our own vegetables. and happiness that comes with farming and handicrafts in the area  that is our home So we don’t like going to the city. We like to live on the mountain, live a slow, simple life, cook our own food. and make your own clothesdescription

“We have faith in spirits and ancestors that our ancestors who have passed away will not go anywhere. will keep protecting us, not going anywhere We pay homage, mention, and talk to our ancestors through the devices, shapes, and divination from the rooster, pig, and cow used in the ritual.”

Faith allows us to go through the things we fear. Many times, we believe in the spirit, nature, surroundings, and self-reliance.

“We Hmong people like to live on the hills because the weather is good, there are few pathogens and it is easy to cultivate. So we don’t have much materials to build a house. Anything that can be found naturally is a good raw material.”

The Maker

Expert technicians In the production of our clothes, starting from planting hemp trees during the rainy season, which is during August, September of every year to grow hemp. And after 2 months and 15 days, hemp can be harvested to be used to make fibers. The web is made through a multi-step process.

“Our hemp fabric’s designed, depend on each craftsmanship skills. Some people are good at candles writing, some are good at embroidery and some are good at weaving.”

“Nowadays, all of our skilled craftsmen are over 60 years old, because of the new generation no longer be inherited.”

Most of candle writing craftsmanship come from the experience of each technician. It can be creative as you like which might be inspired from the surrounding nature among them. All Hmong women tend to show off their skill through their handicraft, to make their family proud of them. The price of our handicrafts is lower than reality. Therefore, the new generation is not interested to inherit this tradition. As a result, we need to inherit and make sure that our handicraft prices reasonable, which is necessary to keep our technicians alive.
